My laboratory group has described a number of transport systems that account for the passage of small molecules across the Iysosomal membrane. In general, these systems allow the products of macromolecular disassembly to have the lysosome so that they can be re-utilized by the cell. We plan to further characterize selected systems by cloning the genes that code for the corresponding transport proteins. We are particularly interested in heritable human disorders of lysosomal transport such as cystinosis.
