New Advances in Detection and Prevention of Cancer

Patricia Ganz, M.D., a medical oncologist, received her B.A. magna cum laude from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) in 1969 and her M.D. from UCLA in 1973. From 1973 to 1978, she completed her training in internal medicine and hematology/oncology at UCLA Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Resident in Medicine. She has been a member of the faculty at UCLA School of Medicine since 1978 and at UCLA School of Public Health since 1992, with current appointments as Professor of Medicine in Hematology/Oncology and Professor of Health Services. Since 1993, she has been Associate Director of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, serving as Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research. She was awarded an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship in 1999 and a Susan G. Komen Foundation Professor of Survivorship Award in 2000.

Dr. Ganz is a pioneer in the assessment of quality of life in cancer patients, and she is active in clinical trials research with the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project and the Southwest Oncology Group. She led quality of life studies in breast cancer chemoprevention trials for the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) and the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR). She also served on the Steering Committee for the BCPT and STAR trials. Her other major areas of research include cancer survivorship and late effects of cancer treatment, cancer in the elderly, and quality of care for cancer patients. She is Director of the UCLA Family Cancer Registry and Genetic Evaluation Program, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Ganz has focused much of her clinical and research efforts in the areas of breast cancer and its prevention, and she was a member of the NCI Progress Review Group on Breast Cancer. She is Associate Editor for Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and CA: A Journal for Clinicians. She was recently appointed to a five-year term on the NCI Board of Scientific Advisors.
